NOTE: This post assumes you have completed Lync Server setup successfully. If you haven't done that yet, please read Path to Lync Server – Step 6: Install Lync Server.

Welcome back! I'm back on the “Path to Lync Server” track with post-install configuration. These are several boxes every newly-minted Lync administrator should tick once you've got Lync Server 2010 up and running.

Like I did before, I'm only covering a selection of things you can configure in Lync. (Covering everything would take way too long!) If you're interested in something not addressed here, check the Lync Server Operations section of TechNet.

We'll be working mostly in the Lync Server Control Panel for these configurations. There are two ways to get to the Control Panel:

Using the Administrative URL

  1. * From a user account that's assigned to the CsAdministrator role, or another role that has appropriate rights and permissions, log on to any computer in your internal deployment.
  2. * Open a browser window, and then enter the Admin URL provided by your Lync installation to start the Lync Server Control Panel.

From a Computer running Lync Server 2010

  1. * From a user account that's a member of the CsAdministrator role, or another role that has appropriate rights and permissions, log on to the computer on which you have installed Lync Server 2010.
  2. * Click Start –> All Programs –> Administrative Tools –> Microsoft Lync Server 2010 –> Lync Server 2010 Control Panel.

First Things First

Install the Lync Server 2010 Resource Kit Tools. Handy for management/troubleshooting later on.

Set up an initial user pool. Do at least 3-5, to familiarize yourself with the process. Here are instructions on how to create new users in Lync:

  1. 1. Enter the Lync Server Control Panel via one of the methods described above.
  2. 2. In the left navigation bar, click Users.
  3. 3. Click Enable users.
  4. 4. On the New Lync Server User dialog, click Add.
  5. 5. In the Search users box,type all or the first portion of the name,display name, first name, last name, Security Accounts Manager (SAM) account name, or phone number of the Active Directory user account that you want, and then click Find.
  6. 6. In the table, select the account you want to add to Lync Server 2010, and then click OK.
  7. 7. Assign the user to a pool, specify any additional details, and assign the policies to the user you want, and then click Enable.

Network Configuration

There's a lot of things you could change in Lync and your network, so the two play nice together. Instead of going through each (some of which won't apply to your install either way), I'll link you to the “Configuring Your Network” section of TechNet. If you want to configure a location policy, network regions, sites or subnets, the information you need is there.
Configuring Your Network – TechNet

External Connectivity (Public IM, Conferencing)

First, see Enable Exchange 2010 SP1 Outlook Web App and IM Integration.
Then, you'll need to enable Federation in the Lync Server Control Panel.

  1. 1. In the left navigation bar, click External User Access, and then click Access Edge Configuration.
  2. 2. On the Access Edge Configuration page, click Global, click Edit, and then click Show details.
  3. 3. In Edit Access Edge Configuration, do one of the following:
    • * To enable federated user access for your organization, select the Enable communications with federated users check box.
    • * To disable federated user access for your organization, clear the Enable communications with federated users check box.
  4. 4. If you selected the Enable communications with federated users check box, do the following:
    • * If you want to support automatic discovery of partner domains, select the Enable partner domain discovery check box.
    • * If your organization supports archiving of external communications, select the Send archiving disclaimer to federated partners check box.
  5. 5. Click Commit.

While you're here you should also enable Anonymous User Access. Without this access, external users (clients, partners) won”t be able to call into your conferences.

  1. 1. In the left navigation bar, click External User Access, and then click Access Edge Configuration.
  2. 2. On the Access Edge Configuration page, click Global, click Edit, and then click Show details.
  3. 3. In Edit Access Edge Configuration, do one of the following:
    • * To enable anonymous user access for your organization, select the Enable communications with anonymous users check box.
    • * To disable anonymous user access for your organization, clear the Enable communications with anonymous users check box.
  4. 4. Click Commit.

Voice Setup

(These steps assume you have set up and configured SIP already.)

Create a voice policy. A voice policy in Lync controls which voice features are available to either a Site (everyone at a network location) or a certain Users pool.

To create a voice policy, click Voice Routing in the left navigation bar of the Lync Server Control Panel. Click “Voice Policy.”
Click New, and choose whether you'll do a Site or User policy. Then you'll be able to determine which calling features the new voice policy should allow. The features you'll be able to enable/disable are:

  • * Call forwarding (enabled by default)
  • * Delegation (enabled by default)
  • * Call transfer (enabled by default)
  • * Call park (disabled by default)
  • * Simultaneous ringing (enabled by default)
  • * Team call (enabled by default)
  • * PSTN re-route (enabled by default) – This must be enabled for Call Admission Control to work. See below.
  • * Bandwidth policy (disabled by default)
  • * Malicious call tracing (disabled by default)

Now that that's done, you'll want to enable users to use Enterprise Voice.

  1. 1. From the Lync Server Control Panel, click Users in the left navigation bar.
  2. 2. In the Search users box, type all or the first portion of the display name, first name, last name, Security Accounts Manager (SAM) account name, SIP address, or line Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) of the user account that you want to enable, and then click Find.
  3. 3. In the table, click the user account that you want to enable for Enterprise Voice.
  4. 4. On the Edit menu, click Show details.
  5. 5. On the Edit Lync Server User page, under Telephony, click Enterprise Voice.
  6. 6. Click Line URI, and then type a unique, normalized phone number (for example, tel:+14255550200).
  7. 7. Click Commit.

Now you'll have to switch over to the Lync Server Management Shell. Why? Two reasons: You'll have to assign the users you just enabled to a voice policy (i.e. the one you created) and a dial plan. These only take a couple steps each, so I'll combine them in one list.

  1. 8. Start the Lync Server Management Shell: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Management Shell.
  2. 9. Run the following at the command prompt to assign each user to a voice policy:
    Grant-CsVoicePolicy -Identity -PolicyName
    (Where is the name of the voice policy you created earlier)

  3. 10. Run the following at the command prompt to assign each user to a dial plan:
    Grant-CsDialPlan -Identity -PolicyName
    (Where is the name of the dial plan you want to use)

Configure Call Admission Control

Unless you've got a huge network with very high bandwidth and low latency, running VoIP and video could severely tax the network. Call Admission Control helps stem the tide by limiting the number of calls that can be made/received in a given time.
